Charlotte City Council member Tiawana Brown is facing federal charges over alleged COVID loan fraud.

Brown and her two adult daughters face charges of wire fraud conspiracy and wire fraud used to falsely obtain pandemic relief loans, Charlotte’s U.S. attorney announced Thursday. They’re accused in an indictment of spending loan money on person expenses, including a birthday party for Brown.

The first-term Democrat called the charges “a political attack.” She said Thursday she doesn’t plan to resign from City Council and intends to run for reelection later this year.

Brown represents west Charlotte’s District 3. She’s spoken openly about spending four years in federal prison in her 20s on fraud charges.
