What are the most important issues facing Mint Hill, and how would you address them?
Responsible growth, infrastructure, intentional town planning. I would be a candidate that builds on what makes Mint Hill great - its people, local businesses and small town charm, but also uses real world experience, data and a look at surrounding towns and what’s happening around us to make the best decisions about our future. Transparency to the citizens is always important, especially with planning and zoning decisions.
How should Mint Hill handle residential, commercial and industrial development? Should the town change any ordinances or rules to alter how development occurs? If so, what?
Very carefully. If we get this wrong we will lose the heart and soul of our town. Balancing the support of our longstanding citizens and property owners, new businesses that want to invest in our town limits and development growth and affordability to attract future generations has to be balanced, and supported by infrastructure, both local and cooperation with county and state entities. A fresh audit and assessment of our town ordinances and downtown Master Plan is welcomed and smart.
What’s the best thing the Board of Commissioners has done for Mint Hill in the last 4 years? And what’s the worst thing?
I love the work they have done on the parks, splash pad, Fire and Public Works Facility and soon to be open Community Center.
The General Assembly has given Mecklenburg County permission to put a referendum on the ballot to raise the county’s sales tax to fund road, rail and bus projects. Will you vote in favor of the referendum? Why or why not?
I see a great deal of positives for the Town of Mint Hill on this. Leveraging the economic power of the entire county would be a huge boost to the infrastructure needs and budget of our town, enabling us to be proactive about road infrastructure and keeping our municipal taxes low. I also see negatives. Transit Authority overhead, adding new layers of bureaucracy and raising taxes is something I have never supported. We need the citizens to have all the facts and let them decide.
