School bus hit by semi and FedEx truck, injuring 10 in rollover crash, NC officials say

A school bus in North Carolina was stopping to pick up a child Tuesday when a tractor-trailer hit it, media outlets report.

Then came the FedEx truck.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was reaching for a cigarette when he realized the Head Start bus had stopped in front of him, Chief Steve Camlin with Acme-Delco Riegelwood Fire Department told WECT.

He swerved but still hit the bus, which rolled three times, according to the media outlet. A FedEx truck was behind the tractor-trailer and also hit the bus, WWAY reported.

The crash occurred on U.S. 74/76 just before 9 a.m., the media outlet reported, citing Columbus County dispatch.

At least 10 people — including eight kids — were injured, according to The Robesonian.

Two had to be airlifted to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center but there were no life-threatening injuries, the newspaper reported.

Those airlifted included the bus driver and a school aid, according to WWAY. The children on board were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Roads were closed several hours while the crash was cleared, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
