Woman badly hurt in plane crash during aviation career event in NC, her family says

A North Carolina woman’s family says she’s still in critical condition after a Monday plane crash, ABC11, The News & Observer’s media partner reports.

The plane crash happened at Gray’s Creek Airport near Fayetteville during an aviation career event that students in a workforce development program were participating in, according to The Fayetteville Observer.

Three participants and a pilot were on the Cessna C172 when it went down, The Fayetteville Observer reports.

Officials identified the four as 18-year-old Vanessa Leal, 19-year-old Jake Parsons, 23-year-old Dominique Northcutt and 24-year-old Justin Elliot, WNCN reports. They were all taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Parsons is the grandson of the Gray’s Creek fire chief who responded to the call, WRAL reports.

“I knew he was out there today,” Marsh told WRAL. “I spotted him first. They were out of the plane. All of them were laying on the ground in different locations.”

Northcutt is now at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill in critical condition, her family told ABC11 on Tuesday.

She’s suffering brain damage, neck and spine damage, broken bones, cuts on her leg and face fractures, her family told the TV station. She recently had surgery to stop bleeding in her brain, which her family says was successful.

Her aunt, Nell Rhodes, told ABC11 they’re hoping to see her back to normal soon.

“She is just one of those young, outgoing girls,” she said.

Officials have not released information on the conditions of the others involved in the crash, WNCN reports.
