Driver ‘intentionally’ rams into NC trooper’s car, injuring him, officials say
A North Carolina driver is accused of “intentionally” crashing into a state highway patrol car after refusing to pull over for speeding, officials told local outlets.
A trooper tried to stop 26-year-old Luis Almanza at about 10:45 p.m. July 25 in Davie County for going more than 30 miles per hour over the speed limit in a 70-mileper-hour zone, the North Carolina Highway Patrol told WXII.
But Almanza refused to stop, troopers said, according to the outlet.
Later down the road, another trooper was waiting to help stop him, so Almanza veered left on purpose and hit the patrol car, causing it to overturn multiple times from the impact, troopers told WBTV.
Both the trooper and Almanza were taken to a hospital for their injuries, officials said, according to WGHP.
Almanza faces eight charges in connection with the crash, including felony assault on a law enforcement officer and reckless driving, the outlet reported.
In a July 26 Facebook post, the North Carolina Sheriff Police Alliance said the injured trooper will likely have a “lengthy recovery process.”
“Please help us pray for his healing and recovery from the impact,” Chaplain Kevin Hobson, with the Sword and Shield Ministry, a religious group for law enforcement officers, said in a July 26 Facebook post.
