An argument turned deadly in rural North Carolina when multiple people began shooting at each other, according to investigators in Granville County.

It happened Monday night at a home on Emily Lane near Oxford, about a 50-mile drive north from downtown Raleigh.

One person died, and three others suffered minor injuries, the Granville County Sheriff’s Office said in a June 23 news release.

“The preliminary information indicates that, around 10:17 p.m., multiple subjects who earlier were engaged in a verbal argument, exchanged gunfire,” the sheriff’s office said

“Deputies quickly responded controlled and cleared the scene and began to provide lifesaving care for the gunshot victim, who despite their efforts succumbed to his injuries. ... Three other individuals at the scene also were injured in the incident but did not require medical attention.”

The identity of the person who died has not been released, and the sheriff’s office has not reported details of a suspect.

An investigation led detectives to obtain search warrants for two other homes on Emily Lane, officials said.

“Multiple subjects were detained and interviews are ongoing,” the sheriff’s office said.
