Snow is back in Charlotte’s forecast for the third weekend in a row.
Anywhere from a dusting to an inch of snow is expected in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties Friday night and early Saturday, meteorologist Robbie Munroe of the National Weather Service office in Greer, S.C., said Wednesday.
One weather model shows more than an inch falling in the Charlotte metro area, although NWS meteorologists will have a better sense of predicted snowfall amounts as more data rolls in by Thursday morning, he said.
“Here we ‘snow’ again,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Incident Management Team posted on Twitter Wednesday morning. ”Although accumulations appear to be minor at this point, it’s always a good idea to remain #WeatherAware.”
However, “large uncertainty remains” as to how much snow could fall, Munroe said.
Because a high of only 37 degrees and a low of 19 are forecast for Charlotte on Saturday, any snow is likely to stick around the rest of the weekend, Monroe said.
“It’s like we’re paying for the nice weather we had in December,” Munroe said of storms that will have brought wintry mixes to Charlotte this month.
Blame a storm that’s forming off the mid-Atlantic coast for the latest expected snow, NWS meteorologists said in a hazardous weather outlook bulletin at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The bulletin included Mecklenburg and nine nearby North Carolina counties, York and Chester counties in South Carolina and parts of the N.C. mountains.
Frigid temps forecast for Charlotte
Charlotte has a 50% chance of rain and snow Friday, according to the NWS forecast Wednesday night.
Sunday should be sunny with a high of 44, followed by a low of 26 early Monday, the forecast shows.
Respective highs of 51 and 52 are predicted Monday and Tuesday, under sunny to mostly sunny skies, according to the NWS.
Expected NC snowfall amounts
Eastern North Carolina could see 2 to 4 inches of snow from the storm, according to the N.C. Emergency Management Office.
In the central part of the state, 1 to 2 inches are expected and less than an inch in the Sandhills and western Piedmont, officials said.
Anywhere from 2 to 6 inches could fall in Western North Carolina near Tennessee, according to N.C. Emergency Management.
