Winter storm power outages spread in Charlotte. Use these maps to check near you
Some Charlotte-area residents remained without power Sunday afternoon as a winter storm continues to coat the area in ice and sleet.
As of 6 p.m., Duke Energy reported more than 700 customers without service in the Charlotte area, with most of those reported in north Charlotte and Gaston County.
You can monitor outages using Duke Energy’s outage map, which shows the number of active outages and the number of customers without power in the area. You can also report and check the status of outages using that link, or by calling 800-769-3766.
The National Weather Service warned Sunday that “significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause widespread and long-lasting power outages,” adding that falling trees and limbs could threaten life and property and make roads “treacherous and impassable.”
Forecasters expected up to an inch of sleet and around a half-inch of ice in the Charlotte area, with hazardous conditions lasting through Monday afternoon.
Outside Charlotte, 44 customers were without power in Lancaster County Sunday and another 33 were out in York County, according to The Electrical Cooperatives of South Carolina.
No outages was reported in Union County, NC.
There were nearly 30,000 people without power across North Carolina around 6 p.m. Sunday, according to poweroutage.us, a website that aggregates data from electrical utilities across the country. The largest chunk of those outages were located in western North Carolina. More than 34,000 were without power statewide in South Carolina.
