Driving in Charlotte is getting dangerous. City leaders must focus on road repairs.
Charlotte roads need many fixes. Now.
Regarding “Spend to repaint lane dividers,” (Nov. 22 Forum):
On top of repainting lane dividers, CDOT needs to eliminate dangerous “mine fields” and level manhole covers on streets like Park Road from Hillside to Kenilworth. It needs to resurface roads that have multiple patch jobs that make vehicles do “the wave” (like Laurel Avenue from Randolph to Providence) and add lane reflectors so drivers can actually see lanes in the rain.
It seems CDOT needs to employ more workforce to meet the needs of an ever-growing population. And our leaders need to back off approving developments until they figure out how our existing roads will accommodate the expanded traffic so we can safely drive and breathe on the roads again.

Immigration stance is within mainstream
Regarding “Foundation for the Carolinas has an important question to answer about hate group donations,” (Nov. 21 Editorial):
The writer is president of NumbersUSA.
Foundation For The Carolinas is under attack on the preposterous charge that groups like mine that advocate for a reduction in annual immigration are so far out of the mainstream the Foundation should deny its donors the ability to designate grants to them.
Yet, NumbersUSA’s founding principles are formed by the findings of two 1990s federal commissions. They recommended annual immigration at around or lower than the 500,000 we are urging (compared to around a million recently).
We also have a long record of agreement in opposing nativism and hostility toward immigrants. One does not have to agree with conclusions that high immigration numbers can exacerbate problems of income inequality and threats to ecosystems to acknowledge they are within the mainstream.

An unfair portrayal of Stanback’s work
Regarding “Foundation for the Carolinas under scrutiny over grants to anti-immigration groups,” (Nov. 24):
It is disappointing to see a retired businessman from Salisbury described in such an unfair manner. Fred Stanback has been responsible for support of essential and important work in Rowan County that includes millions of dollars to children, education, the arts, environment, and homeless community without regard to immigration status.
The Foundation represents other philanthropic individuals and families that enrich and support those in need within my community.

Health care is a basic human need
Regarding “‘Medicare for All’ won’t fix soaring health care costs,” (Nov 20 Opinion):
It seems hospitals and pharmaceutical companies are focusing on making as much profit as possible. What is wrong with this picture? Health care, a basic human need and right, should be a nonprofit business. Same with health care insurance.
How can we make this happen? Other advanced countries have.

Business model fails in the Oval Office
The last two weeks in Washington have shown that what works and is common in business is not good for government “of the people, by the people, for the people” — of any political persuasion.

Waiting for Burr to protect democracy
Sen. Richard Burr says “just like the American people” he is waiting to see if there was an act that “rose to the level of removal from office.”
What the senator does not understand is, the wait is over. The people saw and heard it in days of witness testimony by true patriots. Donald Trump withheld approved military aid to an allied country to force an investigation of a rival.
What we’re actually waiting to see is when Burr will stop supporting Trump.
History will remember those elected officials who were in office when our democracy was on the verge of dying and did nothing to stop it. What side of history will you be on, Sen. Burr? We’re waiting.

Dems are misguided, blinded by hate
Regarding “Dems in Congress are doing their job” (Nov. 22 Forum):
The job of our Congress is not to orchestrate witch hunts against a sitting president because he is from an opposing party.
Let me state clearly and honestly, it is Democrats who are misguided, blinded by hate and partisanship, and who go to any means to discredit and disrupt this administration’s attempts to govern.
