Durham-based baseball league to field team at refurbished Mooresville stadium

A 30-year-old, Durham-based summer collegiate wood bat baseball league is scheduled to field a team at Mooresville’s Moor Park next year after the Lake Norman town completes a multimillion dollar stadium renovation, the league’s commissioner said Thursday.

“Mooresville’s growth, strong baseball tradition, and passionate fan base make it an outstanding fit for the Coastal Plain League, and we look forward to the possibility of bringing CPL baseball to Moor Park,” commissioner Chip Allen said in a statement.

The league topped other competitive bidders to field a team at the park and is working on an agreement with the town and Temerity Baseball LLC, Allen said.

Temerity Baseball owns the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers Single A Chicago White Sox affiliate, the Greensboro Grasshoppers High-A Pittsburgh Pirates team and the Lexington Legends Atlantic League independent team.

“The Lake Norman region is one of the fastest-growing areas in North Carolina, with a passionate fan base and a long history of supporting baseball, making Mooresville a natural fit for the league’s continued growth,” according to the statement issued by Temerity Baseball.

The Coastal Plain League will replace the Mooresville Spinners, a member of the smalle Southern Collegiate Baseball League that played at Moor Park for 11 years.

Fans of the Spinners were dismayed this week after the team said the town unfairly ejected it from the stadium.

Town officials never told him they were taking bids from leagues to field a team in the stadium, Spinners co-owner and general manager Phillip Loftin told The Charlotte Observer.

The Spinners have a lease to play in the stadium through the 2028 summer season, and the dispute may end up with lawyers, Loftin said.

A town spokesperson said Mooresville disputes claims made by the Spinners, but he was no more specific.

What is the Coastal Plain League?

Raleigh-based Capitol Broadcasting Co. owns the Coastal Plain League, along with such teams as the Durham Bulls, Holly Springs Salamanders and Zebulon Devil Dogz. The company also owns WRAL-TV and other stations, and, in a joint venture with Learfield, Raleigh-based Wolfpack Sports Properties.

The Coastal Plain League has 15 franchises in the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia. Major League Baseball has drafted 1,800 league players over the years, including 212 who made it to the Major League, according to league figures.

Famous alumni include NFL Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson and present and former MLB stars Justin Verlander, Ryan Zimmerman, Mark Reynolds, Kevin Youkilis, Chris Taylor, Jake Cave, Alec Bohm and Chas McCormick.
