Nearly every school in the Observer’s coverage area has moved up high school football games to avoid Hurricane Florence, which is expected to dump heavy wind and torrential rain in the Carolinas beginning late Thursday night.

More than two dozen teams in the area did not have games scheduled this week, including six ranked in the Observer’s Sweet 16 prep football poll.

In Mecklenburg County, all public school home games were moved from Friday to Wednesday at 6 p.m. The decision came Monday afternoon, and Vance High football coach Aaron Brand applauded Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for making its move so quickly.

“I was really happy for them for getting everybody on the same page,” Brand said.

However, Brand said that many coaches had some injury concerns about playing so quickly after playing this past Friday. Vance was off last week, so Brand said his players would be fresh.

“But it’s always a concern when you have a quick turnaround like this,” Brand said, “because this is not baseball when you can play multiple games in a short period of time.”

Almost all area high schools will deal with the quick turnaround. A few games were canceled, including West Mecklenburg at Scotland County.

With teams also moving games statewide, the commissioner of the N.C. High School Athletic Association said it’s too soon to talk about possibly extending the high school football season because of the arrival of Hurricane Florence.

In 2016, the NCHSAA extended the season after Hurricane Matthew forced teams to miss games.

“Like all North Carolinians, the NCHSAA Staff is monitoring the impending arrival of Hurricane Florence,” NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker said in a statement. “At this time, it is premature to think about whether the regular season will be extended and playoffs pushed back.”

Ultimately, Brand said the decisions to move games up was the right one and he said he hoped all players and fans can stay safe during the incoming storm.

“It’s good to not play two games in a week,” Brand said. “CMS could’ve moved games to Monday and then we turn around and play a few days later. For people who had to play last Friday, I feel sorry for them, but this was the right thing to do (to play Wednesday). It really was. You don’t want to take a chance with not being able to play this weekend.”
