Friday’s basketball roundup: First Assembly, Independence keep rolling

Zach Clark, Gaston Day: Clark made 8-of-9 field goal attempts, including 4-of-5 3-point attempts in a 93-23 win over Statesville Christian. He finished with 21 points, six assists, six steals and two rebounds.

Providence Day defense: Chargers held Christ School to 38 points in a 49-38 win and limited the taller Greenies to one offensive rebound. Jacolbe Cowan and John Miralia combined for 14 rebounds, five assists and Barrett Kintzinger took three charges.

Independence defense: reigning 4A champs didn’t allow West Meck more than six points in any quarter Friday, winning 62-21. Andra McKee had 13 points, three steals, three rebounds and two assists. Matthew Smith had 10 points, 13 rebounds.

Zane Haglan, Lake Norman: 18 points in a 71-64 win over West Rowan. He scored his 1,000th career point. Lake Norman outscored West Rowan 32-20 in the fourth quarter to rally.

Fletcher Abee, Morganton Freedom: 30 points in a 99-54 win over Valdese Draughn. Freedom outscored Draughn 27-9 in the fourth quarter.

Jaden Bradley, Concord Cannon: freshman All-America candidate had a triple double in Friday’s 81-60 win over Wake Christian: 17 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds.

Cyncier Harrison, Providence Day: sophomore guard had 32 points in a 49-38 win over Christ School

Tyrese McNeal, North Gaston: career-high 37 points in a win over South Point. McNeal, who had eight rebounds, scored 21 points in the second half. The all-conference guard averaged 19 points as a sophomore. Friday, he helped his team outscore South Point 29-10 in the fourth quarter.

Jah’Quez Sanders, Queens Grant: 31 points, nine rebounds, five assists in a 78-59 win over Christ The King. Teammate Xavier Westbrook added 13 points, eight rebounds.

1000: Fort Mill Nation Ford guard Shaman Alston scored his 1,000th point.

32: Community School of Davidson’s Brandon Ellington had 32 points in a 73-63 win over Mountain Island Charter. He made 7-of-9 field goals and all 12 free throws. He also scored his 1,000th career point.

8: Concord First Assembly has won eight straight games after Friday’s 77-70 win over Hickory Grove. Sophomore Isaac Boothe had 27 points, eight assists and two steals.

Friday’s Quickie Stories

No. 6 Charlotte Christian 61, Durham Academy 58: App State recruit J.C. Tharrington hit a 26-foot 3-point shot and, a few moments later, he hit two free throws with 24 seconds left to help lift the Knights (8-1) to a win at previously unbeaten Durham Academy (8-1). Tharrington finished with 17 points. Senior Efosa U-Edosomwan had a game-high 21 points. Freshman M.J. Rice led Durham Academy with 19 points.

Charlotte Country Day 63, Asheville School 54: The Bucs (6-2) won their third straight game, getting 18 points, five assists from senior Alex Tabor; and 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals from senior Rylan McLaurin. Asheville School (5-2) got 25 points from Titus Morrison.
