Cannon School’s future is awful bright, but Cougars want to focus on here and now
Cannon School doesn’t start a senior and only plays one in the regular rotation, but Cougars coach Che’ Roth said he is focused on this season and not thinking about how good his team could be down the road.
“I know we have played a lot of young kids, and we played a lot of young kids last year, for a reason,” Roth said after his team, No. 6 in the Observer Sweet 16 defeated CISAA rival Charlotte Latin 79-64 Friday night at home. “It’s paid off, but we’re still young. And these kids want to compete a high level. We’re not just thinking about winning a league or a state championship, but we want to grow our program on a national level.”
Few teams in the Carolinas have played the type of nonconference schedule that Roth’s team did. Cannon played multiple state champions and national powers in November and December. Of the Cougars’ five losses, three are by two points or less and one is by four.
“I love where we are,” Roth said. “Dorman (which beat Cannon 69-45 on Dec. 21) is the best team we’ve played. But we’ve been beaten at the buzzer twice, and we missed 18 free throws to lose a game.”
Roth has been at Cannon eight years, and he has been to the N.C. Independent Schools Final Four twice. This team, whether now or later, is going to be his best chance to get a 4A ring in the toughest class to win a championship in North Carolina’s public or private schools.
Cannon just has talent. Sophomore Jaden Bradley is a top-10 recruit nationally in the Class of 2022. Sophomore DJ Nix is ranked No. 9 in the class statewide by Phenom Hoop Report.
On Friday night, Latin held Nix, Cannon’s second-leading scorer, to two points, and Latin still lost by 15. Cannon led 26-8 in the first quarter and rolled behind 26 points from Bradley, 32 from 6-4 junior Jarvis Moss and 12 from junior Elijah Ormiston.
And Cannon 7-foot sophomore center Christian Reeves (back) hasn’t played all season after a promising summer.
So the future for this team could be off-the-charts good, and with the 4A NCISAA state championship chase as wide open as it has been in a long time, Roth’s Cougars have just as good a chance as anyone to win a ring this year, too.
“We want to put a banner on our wall and rings on our fingers,” Roth said. “This group is as talented and as tough as we’ve had, and they’re also extremely hard working and very competitive, and they’re really close in the locker room. We have a super high level of belief in our players, and we really just have a fun team.”
And one that’s only going to get better.

Three Quick Thoughts
1. Not sure I’ve seen too many freshman classes as good as the one we have now. On Friday night, for example, Covenant Day freshman Aden Holloway had 29 points in an upset win over Charlotte Christian. Covenant Day hasn’t beaten Christian much (Christian freshman Bryce Cash and TJ Hardy are having good years, too).
At Gaston Day, 6-11 Callum Richard had 15 points in a win over Gaston Christian. And in Hickory, Combine Academy’s Robert Dillingham has impressed all season, regularly having big scoring nights against nationally ranked competition.
At Vance, Jaylen Curry and Trey Green will have four years to play together, and they are all-conference good now. Green had 25 points — and a huge steal and slam — in a win at Lake Norman on Friday.
▪ And the 2022 class of sophomores isn’t bad with guys like 7-foot Butler center Patrick Wessler, West Charlotte point guard Marcus Magness and Bradley and Nix playing starring roles.
2. What’s going to make Vance’s girls so tough in postseason is their balance. In Friday’s 61-43 win over Lake Norman, Tanajah Hayes had 19 points, 10 steals and three assists, and Trinity Moreland had 19 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
3. Davidson Day girls’ star Mallorie Haines has battled some ankle injuries this season, but she’s still having a memorable junior run. She had 40 points, nine rebounds and four steals in a 71-49 win over University Christian and passed the 1,500 point mark in her career. Haines, a junior, has committed to Davidson.
