State championship coach leaving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for college job
Baronton Terry, who won a state championship at West Charlotte High and led Olympic to the state semifinals, is leaving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Terry was introduced as associate men’s basketball coach at Chicago State. The Division I school made the announcement of Terry’s hiring Thursday.
Terry coached at Olympic from 2017-21 and led his team to conference championships each season he was there. He was a three-time conference coach of the year with the Trojans.
At West Charlotte from 2008-16, Terry led West Charlotte to back-to-back state finals appearances in 2011 and 2012. The Lions won the 2011 state title and reached the regional final, or state semifinals, in 2014 and 2015.
Terry’s Olympic team reached the state semifinals in 2020.
Terry was Charlotte Observer Coach of the Year for the 2011-12 season.
“Baronton brings over 30 years of experience to the Cougars program,” Chicago State head coach Gerald Gillion said. “He’s going to be tremendous for the university both on and off the court. He is well respected throughout the basketball community and he’s well-rounded, a teacher of the game, a teacher of life and a tremendous recruiter.”
