Cannon School: two-time state champs improved to 8-9 after upsetting No. 7 Providence Day on the road Tuesday. Cannon star PG Austin Swartz played just his third game of the season due to a knee injury, and due to COVID and various injuries, Cannon played its first game all season with its full team. Cannon had 11 offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter to help rally late.

Tuesday’s #BIG5 Boys Top Performers

Derek Bradley, Westminster Catawba: 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists in a 58-52 win over Metrolina Christian.

Isaiah Evans, North Meck: 22 points, six rebounds, six assists in a win over Queen CIty 4A rival Hopewell.

Maurio Hanson, Chambers: 20 points, 10 rebounds in a 72-57 win at No. 9 West Charlotte.

Elijah Strong, Myers Park: 24 points, a team-high, in a 72-67 win over rival South Meck. Teammate Sir Mohammed had 22.

Austin Swartz, Cannon School: sophomore point guard had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists in a 63-62 win at Providence Day. Swartz tied the game with a spinning layup with one second to go and was fouled. He hit the free throw to seal the win.

Tuesday’s Recaps

Alexander Central 53, Ashe County 33 ... Evan Presnell scored 18 points, and the Cougars (13-2, 1-0) held the Huskies to 29.3 percent field goal shooting in this Northwestern 3A-4A game. Jake Grubb scored 18 of Ashe County’s points.

Carolina International 96, Piedmont Community Charter 49 ... Jermayne Brewton scored 32 points, making 14-of-18 from the floor, and T.J. Solomon added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Comets, who are now 5-0 in Metro 8 1A play.

Charlotte Christian 63, Covenant Day 40 ... The Knights won their CISAA opener, holding Covenant Day to four points in the fourth quarter. Bryce Cash led the victors with 20 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. John Lash added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 6 Charlotte Latin 57, Charlotte Country Day 49 ... Brandon Lavitt’s 14 points and Jaylen Jones’ 13 led the Hawks (15-1, 1-0) past the Buccaneers (13-7, 0-1) in a CISAA opener.

No. 8 Gaston Day 68, No. 13 Northside Christian 63 ... Callum Richard had 17 points and 14 rebounds, and Chris Britt added 17 points, six rebounds and nine assists for the Spartans (16-1, 5-0) in this Metrolina Athletic game. Wesley Tubbs had 18 points and nine rebounds for Northside Christian (12-7, 3-3).

Kings Mountain 88, Stuart Spencer 82 ... The Mountaineers (7-5, 3-0) handed the Storm (11-1, 2-1) its first loss of the season, going on a 6-0 run late in the Big South 3A game to break a 72-72 tie. The Storm opened the season with a school-record 11-game winning streak.

Lincoln Charter 77, Christ the King 50 ... Elijah Burnett scored 21 points, hitting 8-of-10 field goals, as Lincoln Charter improved to 11-4 and 2-0 in the Catawba Shores 1A-2A.

No. 4 North Mecklenburg 88, Hough 61 ... The Vikings (14-2, 4-1) rebounded from last Friday’s loss to Chambers with a big Queen City7 3A-4A victory. Isaiah Evans led the victors with 22 points, six rebounds and six assists. Jordan Crawford added 16 points and four assists.

North Rowan 57, Lexington 52 ... Quashawn Carpenter had 19 points and nine rebounds in the Cavaliers’ (10-1, 4-1) Central Carolina 2A victory.

Rocky River 56, Independence 32 ... The Ravens improved to 4-1 in the Southwestern 4A, remaining in a virtual first-place tie with Charlotte Catholic and East Mecklenburg.

R-S Central 88, East Rutherford 53 ... The Hilltoppers (13-2, 3-0) jumped to a 40-26 halftime lead and then outscored the Cavaliers 31-11 in the third quarter of the Mountain Foothills 2A game.
