Salisbury coach Lakai Brice said that before the playoffs started, she and her staff had the players look at photos of the Salisbury teams that won three straight girls’ state championships from 2009-11. Then they talked about those accomplishments.

“The girls walk past those pictures of the state champions every day,” Brice says. “We talked about the history of Salisbury basketball, and how they could fit in.”

They fit in really well.

The Hornets beat Farmville Central 54-44 Saturday to win the 2A state championship in Chapel Hill. Championship MVP Kyla Bryant had 17 points and four rebounds.

Jamecia Huntley also had a big day for Salisbury, scoring 13 points to go with eight rebounds, while playing against Farmville’s top defender, Journee McDaniel.

For Farmville, East Carolina recruit Amiya Joyner had a team-high 16 points, 23 rebounds and five blocks. McDaniels had 14 points and five rebounds.

Farmville Central finished the season 27-5. Salisbury finished 28-1 and won its fifth state title.

4A: Chambers make history with 3-peat

Chambers High played five underclassmen down the stretch of its 46-44 win over Apex Friendship in the N.C. 4A state final, including three sophomores.

Those young players helped the Cougars rally from a 37-30 fourth quarter deficit and win their 11 straight game, stopping an Apex Friendship team featuring N.C. player of the year Indya Nivar.

Nivar finished with 14 points and seven rebounds and just missed a game-tying layup with three seconds left.
