NC Football Participation rises

The NC HIgh School Athletic Association reports a 17.3 percent increase in football participation this season from 2020-21, with 11 programs returning to the field.

Nationally, however, the National Federation of High Schools released its first participation study in three years. It showed a four percent dip in all sports participation from the most recent survey done in 2018-19. North Carolina saw a 9.1 percent drop, across all sports, in that same time frame. Specifically, girls participation in North Carolina dipped 12.5 percent.

But football was up as was boys lacrosse, up nearly 33 percent from a year ago. Girls lacrosse was up 14 percent.

“As we look at the participation numbers from last year, it is obvious to us that we are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker. “We believe that last year’s data indicates we may be encountering some lingering effects of the COVID-19 shortened season. Perhaps shorter seasons coupled with overlapping seasons may have contributed to a sharper decline in participation for North Carolina than we have seen in other states.”
