Olympic moves into the top 10 of The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll heading into big week

Fresh off its 34-21 win over Ardrey Kell Friday, Olympic High moves into the top 10 of The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll.

That’s not a common thing.

But the Trojans, who won their first outright league championship in 13 years Friday, are doing uncommon things this season. Next up for Olympic is Myers Park then a potential high seed in the N.C. 4A playoffs.

Several other ranked teams will face rivalry opponents Friday in games that could shake up the rankings.

No. 2 Butler will face No. 11 Independence in a rivalry of teams just a few miles down the street from each other, and this one will probably be the biggest meeting in years, perhaps since both teams won 10 state championships from 2000-12.

No. 1 Kings Mountain will face a 7-2 Crest team that has won three straight. A Crest win could force a three-way tie for the Big South 3A championship (South Point is 5-1 in league play; Kings Mountain 6-0).

And in one of the state’s biggest rivalries, No. 5 Chambers faces No. 6 Mallard Creek.
