Weddington High QB Gregory Fee is The Observer’s high school football player of the week

Weddington High School quarterback Gregory Fee, who will lead the Warriors into Friday’s NCHSAA 4A state semifinal at Greensboro Grimsley, is the final Charlotte Observer high school football player of the week for the 2024 season.

Fee was nominated for the award after throwing four touchdown passes in a 55-0 win over Western Guilford in the third round of the playoffs on Nov. 29.

After that game, he won a week-long vote among Observer readers to become the 14th player to win this season.

Later this week, all 14 previous winners will be entered into a contest to determine the reader’s choice football player of the year.

A year ago, Fee mostly played behind Weddington senior Tyler Budge, who helped lead the Warriors to the 4A state title.

Warriors coach Andy Capone felt that Fee was a starter-quality player as a junior, and said he was happy he stayed at Weddington.

“In this day and age, Gregory could have chosen to go elsewhere, but he didn’t,” Capone said. “He stuck with our program. He has gotten progressively better, and he’s a really good quarterback right now.”

Last Friday, Fee helped Weddington a 37-21 win over East Forsyth, which featured UNC recruit Bryce Baker, a quarterback who is a finalist for the biggest high school football award in the state, Mr. Football.

Weddington won its 19th straight game. Fee threw three more touchdown passes.

Capone said interest in Fee from colleges has picked up as the season has gone along.

“I’ll tell you this,” Capone said. “Someone is going to get a really fine quarterback in this guy.”
