Saturday’s rewind: Independence’s start surprises coach; Lake Norman, Cannon get big wins

Independence High’s boys’ basketball team beat Asheville Reynolds 67-49 on Saturday at home and improved to 6-0.

And here’s why that surprises coach Preston Davis, who won a state championship at Independence as a coach and a player.

“We graduated six seniors, and four were starters,” Davis said. “The one who didn’t start was a full-time starter his junior year. But I have a group that is a little bit better offensively but still commits to the defensive side the way my past teams have. It’s been pretty good so far, but I can’t lie, I am a little surprised.”

Saturday, Independence used a 24-9 advantage in the second quarter to bust open the game.

Tremaine Keeter (18 points) and Grant Clayton (17) led Reynolds (1-2), which lost 62-33 to Myers Park on Friday.

Independence got 15 points from Kaleb Jasper, 13 from Dylan McFarland and 10 from Jaxson Neely, who scored 62 points, had 36 rebounds and made 11 3-point attempts in the Patriots’ four wins this week.

For the season, Neely and Independence are averaging 63 points per game, up from 56.3 last season and 49.9 the year before that.

“I knew we had a chance to be good,” Davis said, “and our non-conference schedule is pretty tough. I wasn’t sure (how we would do) with the early tests, but they have responded.”

Lake Norman, Cannon girls get big wins

Also Saturday, Lake Norman’s boys and Cannon School’s girls — the No. 1 teams in The Observer’s Sweet 16 polls — got statement wins.

Lake Norman beat 2024 N.C. 4A state finalist Wilmington New Hanover, and Cannon went and played the N.C. 4A state girls champion, Rolesville, on Rolesville’s home court.
