Wintry weather threat delays high school state wrestling meet, basketball seedings

An approaching winter storm system has forced the N.C. High School Athletic Association to delay the state wrestling championship meets by two days.

And high school basketball teams and their fans will have to wait an extra day for the state playoff seedings and tournament schedule.

The state wrestling championships will be held Saturday, Sunday and Monday, the NCHSAA announced Tuesday. The meet will remain at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The meet originally was set for Thursday through Saturday.

The NCHSAA also said it will determine basketball seedings and playoff schedules Sunday, rather than Saturday as originally planned.

“We settled on a change in the wrestling schedule, in the interest of safety for all of those involved,” NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker said.

Tucker said the NCHSAA consulted with the Greensboro Coliseum staff and others involved in the meet.

The storm system is forecast to bring snow, sleet and freezing rain to much of North Carolina on Wednesday. The heaviest snow is forecast for the northern part of the state, from Greensboro east to the coast. A variety of winter storm warnings, watches and winter weather advisories are in effect for nearly all of North Carolina.

Delaying the basketball seedings by a day will enable conferences to finish their tournaments Saturday, if there are postponements earlier in the week. Originally, conference tournament finals were to finish Friday, so seeding could take place Saturday.

Tournament delays loom for a number of conferences across the state, possibly even including the Charlotte area.

The new schedule for the state wrestling championships:

Saturday

Girls’ first round, 1 p.m.

Boys’ 3A first round, 3 p.m.

Boys’ 4A first round, 5 p.m.

Boys’ 2A first round, 7 p.m.

Sunday

Consolations, 3:30 p.m.
