Independence High’s Maliyah Alexander is The Observer’s high school athlete of the week.

Alexander, a senior on the softball team, went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, a home run and three RBIs with two runs scored to lead Independence to a 17-1 win over South Mecklenburg on Feb. 25. Alexander also picked up the win on the mound in the same game with three strikeouts.

Alexander also went 2 for 3 at the plate, while taking the loss on the mound with five strikeouts in a 7-0 loss at Weddington on Feb. 26.

Alexander finished off the week by getting another win on the mound with 11 strikeouts, while scoring four runs in a 12-2 win over Myers Park on Feb. 28.

Alexander, a North Carolina A&T commit, now has 253 strikeouts for Independence (2-1).
