Prep roundup: Catholic’s Will Hartman among 3 area state golf champs

Three years ago, when he was a freshman, Charlotte Catholic’s Will Hartman made four birdies in his final round to win the N.C. 4A state golf championship.

Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 8, Hartman —now a senior — won another.

Hartman, who the 4A Western Regional title last week, shot 1-under par over nine holes in Monday’s first round, which was cut in half due to rain. The Vanderbilt recruit came back Tuesday with a blistering 7-under-par 65 to win by the state title two shots.

Hartman rolled in a birdie on his final hole.

Pinecrest’s Colby Hutchens, who shot 67 Tuesday, finished in second place, helping lead Pinecrest to its third straight 4A state title. Pinecrest was 16-under-par as a team in the second round. Raleigh’s Broughton High was second and Charlotte Catholic and Hough finished third and fourth.

In the individual race, after Hartman and Hutchens, Hoggard’s Dylan Lewis finished third and Ardrey Kell’s Jack Pelletier finished fourth.

Stuart Cramer, East Lincoln star win 3A golf titles

Stuart Cramer High, from Belmont, won its first NCHSAA state golf championship Tuesday in Fayetteville, beating two-time defending champ Terry Sanford, which is located in Fayetteville.

The Storm was led by sophomore Lane Crotts, who shot a two-day, 3-under-par 141 to finish third individually. Senior teammate Aiden Vargosko shot 2-under-par 140 and finished ninth.

East Lincoln’s Warren Stiglitz won the individual championship with a blistering final round.

After shooting 1-under in Monday’s first round, Stiglitz shot a 5-under-par 67 Tuesday to finish two shots clear of Fred T. Foard’s Brewer Lael.

Stiglitz is the first individual state champion in East Lincoln’s history.

Salisbury wins 2A golf, seventh title overall

Salisbury High won its seventh NCHSAA boys golf championship at Pinehurt No. 6, beating Mooresville’s Pine Lake Prep by one shot.

It was Salisbury’s first title in 13 years. Hornets’ juniors John McCoy and Sam Goodman both finished 8-over-par and tied for sixth in the individual race. Pine Lake Prep’s Harrison Aull also finished in a tie for sixth.

West Wilkes sophomore Slater Meade won the individual title. He led by one shot after Monday’s first round,but shot a 5-under-par 66 in round two. He won by six shots over 2023 state champ Pennson Badgett from East Surry.

Mount Airy takes 1A golf title

Mount Airy won the second NCHSAA boys’ golf championship in school history, beating Huntersville’s Christ the King school by two shots. The championship, scheduled for 36 holes over two days, was shortened to one day and 18 holes due to rain on Monday.

South Stokes junior Sawyer Slate won the individual title in a sudden death playoff over Cornerstone Charter sophomore Sam Caraher after both players shot even-par 72.

Baseball: No. 1 Cuthbertson moves on

Cuthbertson High, the No. 1 seed in the N.C. 4A West, beat No. 9 seed Myers Park 4-0 Tuesday to advance to Friday’s state quarterfinals.

Cuthbertson will host West Forsyth Friday. West Forsyth beat South Iredell 2-1 in its third round game.

Cuthbertson scored twice in the first and twice in the second inning against Myers Park Tuesday, and the Cavaliers’ pitcher Gavin Aldredge allowed only three hits and stuck out eight in 6.1 innings.

Cuthbertson has won eight of its last nine games and is two rounds away from its first state championship appearance.

Myers Park ended its season at 20-8.

In other action Tuesday, Cherryville beat Hayesville 2-1 in the 1A third round. Cherryville, the No. 1 overall seed, will play Uwharrie Charter or North Stokes in the quarterfinals Friday. Parker Anderson pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 for the Ironmen.

Christ The King advanced with a 9-5 win over Draughn in the 1A playoffs. Christ The King, a No. 3 overall seed in the West, will host Eastern Randolph on Friday. Jaxon Ehret and Troy Alderfer each drove in two runs for the Crusaders.

In the NCISAA 2A playoffs, Gaston Christian blanked John Paul II Catholic 11-0 and advanced to this weekend’s best-of-three championship series. Carter Rowe smacked a grand slam, and Xander Sutton homered and drove in three runs. Logan Davis pitched a four-hitter. In the finals, Gaston Christian will face Sanford Grace Christian, which downed Hickory Grove Christian 7-3. Von Pelow homered and drove in two runs for Hickory Grove.

Several other area games were postponed due to weather. Providence will play at TC Roberson in a third round game at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Marvin Ridge at South Caldwell, Lake Norman Charter at East Rowan and Lincoln Charter at Burns will also be played Wednesday.

Myers Park (13-7-2) has outscored opponents 103-24.

Tuesday, Mustangs junior star Amaya Falzarano scored five goals. Teammate Sophia Pinkney, a senior, had two. Myers Park will host Greensboro’s Page High in the second round Thursday. Page beat Alexander Central 6-0 in its first round match.

Second-seeded Providence Day (21-2-2) advanced by blanking Covenant Day 2-0. Abby Goldean and Ayla Johnson each scored a goal, and goalkeeper Molly Deblitz had five saves. The Chargers are defending NCISAA 4A champions.

Saturday’s final is set for 2 p.m. at Charlotte Latin.

Marvin Ridge 2, Grimsley 0: Marvin Ridge (12-2-6), the reigning N.C. 4A state champion, won its third straight game. The Mavericks scored both goals in the first half.

West Henderson 2, North Lincoln 1: The Knights’ season ended with a 3A setback. Estrella Nieto scored North Lincoln’s goal.

Bradford Prep 7, Piedmont Community Charter 0: Emma Clark and Sarah Miller each scored two goals, and the Bears advanced to the second round in 1A.

Highland Tech 7, Cherokee 0: The host Rams (16-5-1) built a 7-0 halftime lead and coasted to a 1A first-round victory.

Softball

Reagan 7, Hickory Ridge 3: Kennedy Morgan doubled and drove in two runs, but the Ragin’ Bulls (21-5) saw their season end in the third round of the 4A playoffs.

Enka 6, East Lincoln 1: The host Jets (23-1) scored five times in the bottom of the fourth, breaking a 1-1 tie, and coasted to a 3A victory. East Lincoln finished 15-7.

Rockingham County 11, Piedmont 1: Sarah Belk doubled and scored the only run for the Panthers in this 3A contest.

Union Academy 8, Draughn 0: Avery Wilson struck out 20 and allowed only three hits, as the Cardinals cruised to a 1A triumph. Taylor Surratt singled and homered, and Avery Chaney had two hits and two RBIs.
