Friday’s high school rewind: How The Sweet 16 fared, NC scores, next week’s schedule

Week 5 brought some big surprises and some big wins.

A few highlights:

1) Mallard Creek got a wild win in Raleigh — after Cardinal Gibbons rallied with its backup quarterback to take a fourth quarter lead. And a big time defensive stand helped the Mavericks get the W.

2) Providence beat Butler 27-21, beating the Bulldogs for the first time since 2005. It was big bounce back for the Panthers, who snapped a three-game losing streak. With games against Rocky River and East Mecklenburg coming up, the Panthers could get on a winning streak.

3) Providence Day dominated nationally-ranked Rabun Gap at home, getting a monster game from Syracuse-bound QB Zaid Lott in a 55-34 win.

4) South Mecklenburg got its fourth win in a row, dominating a hot East Mecklenburg team, and Rocky River got its second win in a row, stopping Garinger 20-0.

Friday’s Charlotte-area roundup

RANKED TEAMS

Charlotte Christian moved the ball over nearly all the field Friday night – except inside the Myers Park 20.

Instead, it was the visiting Mustangs who came up with the clutch plays, and No. 4-ranked Myers Park downed the Knights 24-6 before a standing-room-only crowd.

The Knights (1-3) moved the ball into the Mustangs’ red zone on four straight possessions in the second and third quarters. Their net yield from those drives: 0 points.

The most spectacular of Myers Park’s big plays came 18 seconds into the second quarter.

The Mustangs (4-1) had driven deep into Charlotte Christian territory late in the first quarter, but the Knights’ Dylan Smith picked up a Mustang fumble and dashed 66 yards to the Myers Park 19. The Mustangs held, forcing Charlotte Christian to try a field goal. Elijah Boythe’s 22-yard kick was blocked, and Myers Park’s Josh Hines picked up the ball and dashed 88 yards for a touchdown.

On their next possession, the Knights drove to the Myers Park 17 before the drive stalled. Then Charlotte Christian drove again, reaching the Mustangs’ 2 with 24 seconds left. But the next snap went over quarterback Elliot Newcomb’s head, and he fell on the ball at the 17. A last-second field goal try sailed wide.

Still down only 10-0, Charlotte Christian opened the second half by driving to the Myers Park 20 but turned the ball over on downs.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs were making enough offensive plays to open the gap.

After the Knights’ early third-quarter drive, Myers Park went 80 yards on scored on a short run by Josh Falzarano.

The Mustangs made it 24-0 early in the fourth quarter on a long pass from Ramir Watson to Chaz Portis.

Charlotte Christian finally converted midway in the fourth quarter, with Newcomb scoring on a 13-yard run to cap an 80-yard drive.

Travis Hill then scored on a 14-yard run, and the Patriots tied the game 20-20 on Zakai Milton’s two-point conversion run midway in the third quarter.

Neither team scored until Liles’ game-winner.

No. 7 West Charlotte 55, West Mecklenburg 0: The Lions (3-2) built a 41-0 lead and pummeled their west-side neighbors. Jamouri Nichols threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores.

Ronald Reagan 24, No. 9 Lake Norman 21: Reagan scored with two minutes left for the victory. Lake Norman had taken a 21-17 lead on Kaden Craft’s 5-yard touchdown run with 3:37 remaining.

Craft’s run capped a 96-yard drive that started when Lake Norman stopped a Reagan drive near the goal line.

No. 10 Mooresville 42, East Forsyth 14: The Blue Devils (3-2) scored an impressive lopsided victory over a tough East Forsyth team. Mooresville entered the game as the No. 7-ranked 7A team in the state, while East Forsyth was No. 6.

East Forsyth built a 14-3 lead in the second quarter, but Ja’Darius McCombs ran 68 yards for a touchdown and Andrew Cummings kicked his second field goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 14-13.

Mooresville went ahead to stay with 1:22 left in the half on a 31-yard pass from Brody Norman to Chanse Bost. Norman and Bost connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and Norman ran 34 yards for a fourth-quarter score.

Martino Smith and Braylon Smith scored the other Ashbrook touchdowns, while Patrick Blee scored for the Raiders.
