Friday rewind: NC scores, how the Sweet 16 fared, next week’s schedule

One mistake can be too many when you’re facing a team like No. 1-ranked Providence Day.

Charlotte Christian was giving its unbeaten neighborhood rival a tough battle Friday night and was trailing 26-20 late in the first half.

The Knights had moved into Providence Day territory when two Charger defenders hit Charlotte Christian quarterback Elliott Newcomb and forced a fumble.

The Chargers’ Jace Goodwin fell on the ball, and on the next play, Providence Day quarterback Zaid Lott connected with Gordon Sellars on a 50-yard touchdown.

That put the Chargers up 33-20, and they pulled away for a 46-30 victory.

Providence Day (9-0, 2-0 Big South) can wrap up a perfect regular season next Friday at home against Charlotte Country Day (6-2, 1-1).

Charlotte Christian matched the Chargers in the early going Friday night, as each team scored on its first three possessions.

The Knights (4-5, 1-1) were really hurt early in the third quarter when Newcomb, who had a spectacular first half outside of the fumble, was injured. Charlotte Christian was not able to mount a drive after that.

Newcomb completed 11 of 14 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns.

Lott had similar numbers, completing 13 of 20 for 188 yards and three scores.

Providence Day running back Aidan Gallos ran for 111 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Sellars had a big game, catching touchdown passes of 28 and 50 yards, and blocking a pair of extra points in the first half.
