High School Sports

New rankings are out. These are the top high school girls’ basketball teams in NC

There are 12 new teams in the North Carolina statewide girls’ high school basketball polls this week.

There are also two new No. 1 teams in the nine polls.

In 3A, Polk County (12-0) jumped up one spot to No. 1, taking over from Surry Central (12-2).

In 7A, Lake Norman (10-1) took over the top spot after former No. 1 North Meck was upset on the road by Mallard Creek a week ago. Mallard Creek moved up one spot, to No. 5 in the 8A poll.

Lake Norman is the reigning N.C. 4A state champion and has only lost to reigning 1A state champion Cherokee (12-0), which is currently No. 1 in the 2A poll.

This school year, the N.C. High School Athletic Association doubled its classification from four to eight divisions.

Note: The rankings, sponsored by The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer of Raleigh, are compiled by Randall Clark, a longtime N.C. high school basketball expert and a co-host of The Observer’s Talking Preps streaming show.

Here are the rankings.
