Thursday’s girls’ rewind: No. 11 Cannon stops No. 6 Providence Day on the road

Providence Day was missing injured star Ginny Anne Dumont and Cannon School took advantage, getting a big CISAA conference road win Thursday.

Cannon School’s 53-41 win likely gives the Cougars the inside track to the league championship.

“I thought we played really well,” Cannon School coach Kelvin Drakeford said. “I thought it was a rough start, going into halftime 19-18. No true flow to the game with a lot of whistles. But in the second half, I thought we adjusted to the whistle and started defending the way we’re capable of defending, and we were able to create a lead from there.”

Cannon (17-6, 5-0) won its third straight game and ended Providence Day’s six-game win streak. London Truesdale led Cannon with 15 points. Jaida McClure, an Appalachian State recruit, led Providence Day with 16 points.

The Chargers (18-4, 4-1) will likely need to win the rematch at Cannon on Feb. 6 to have a chance at forcing a tie for the conference title, assuming both teams win out against other conference foes.
