  • Multiple area players posted big nights, with several teams advancing records.

West Mecklenburg continued its Cinderella season Friday, upsetting Sweet 16 No. 14 Hough with a shot at the buzzer.

The Hawks, who won 51-50, have won four in a row and beat their second ranked team in 10 days. West Meck, which was 0-25 last season, beat Myers Park, 72-69, on Jan. 20.

Josiah Pratt deflected an inbound pass meant for a Hough player sprinting down the sidelines. Nasir White grabbed the deflection, turned and shot the ball off the backboard and into the net for an exciting finish.

In the win, West Meck’s Josiah Bridges made 7 of 13 shots and had 17 points, nine rebounds and three assists. White had 14 points and four steals.

The Hawks are now 11-8 overall and 4-2 in conference, good for a tie for second place. West Meck last had 11 wins in a season in 2019-20.

Is East Lincoln’s Jaxon Dollar the best 2-sport athlete in NC?

Down in Lincoln County, East Lincoln junior Jaxon Dollar has become the state’s top high school football recruit in the junior class. He’s making a serious case as the state’s best junior basketball recruit as well.

“He does freakish things,” East Lincoln coach Jon Hancock said. “Some games, he’ll have six or seven dunks. It’s crazy. And it’s not just the dunks. When I coached at Mallard Creek, we had (former Hough High and UNC star) Luke Maye and (former Chambers High and NC State star Torin) Dorn in the league, and he’s as good as any of those guys. He’s just physically off the charts with the stuff he can do.”

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart helicoptered into see him this week, and he’s got nearly 40 Power 4 offers.

Shorthanded North Meck runs past Mallard Creek

HUNTERSVILLE — One day after an emotional 69-64 road win over West Charlotte, two-time defending state champion North Mecklenburg played without two senior starters as it rolled to an 85-65 victory over visiting Mallard Creek on Friday night.

North Mecklenburg head coach Duane Lewis declined to comment on the game or the reason seniors Ashton Pierce and ExZavier Young didn’t play in Friday’s game. Pierce and Young were the Vikings’ leading scorers in Thursday’s win at West Charlotte that ended with chaotic pushing and shoving during the postgame handshake that spilled over into the middle of the court and also involved several fans.

Without Pierce and Young, North Mecklenburg fell behind 15-11 late in the first quarter before junior sharpshooter Alek Lewandowski led a balanced attack that turned the close contest into a runaway.

The Vikings went on a 27-13 burst to end the first half after falling behind by four to take a 38-28 halftime lead.

In the second half, North Mecklenburg took a 20-point lead late in the third quarter and would build as much as a 29-point lead before taking the victory.

Lewandowski hit six 3-pointers and had 20 points to lead the Vikings (16-3, 6-0 Meck Power Six 7A/8A), who also got 18 points from Wilson Estwick, 15 from D.J. Lindsey Jr., and 10 from David Oates.

Lejalin Overton had 15 points for Mallard Creek (6-14, 0-6).
