Two new teams join the Observer’s Sweet 16 this week: Kannapolis’ A.L. Brown High and South Mecklenburg.

The schools have rich football traditions.

A.L. Brown (2-0) has been to five state championship games and has won two, the most recent coming in 2008. South Mecklenburg’s 1981 team was 14-0 under coach Jim Seacord and won the N.C. 4A title.

This season, South Meck is 2-0 after wins against Marvin Ridge and East Mecklenburg. The Sabres will play their third straight road game against Porter Ridge on Saturday at Monroe High. South Meck’s first home game is Sept. 11 against rival Myers Park.

A.L. Brown started the season with wins against rival Concord and South Rowan. The Wonders play at Northwest Cabarrus this week before playing No. 11 Mooresville on Sept. 11.
