Former Vance High assistant Michael McNeil is new boys basketball coach at Hopewell

Former Vance High assistant coach Michael McNeil is the new head boys basketball coach at Hopewell.

McNeil replaces Damon Bost, who coached at the school for six seasons.

McNeil played football at Mars Hill and earned his elementary education degree in May 2000. After college, he was a head middle school basketball coach in Bertie County for four years. He was later head boys basketball and football coach at Charlotte’s Sedgefield Middle School from 2004-11. After that, he was at Vance as a football and basketball assistant as well as head junior varsity coach.

At Hopewell, McNeil faces a rebuilding task. Hopewell hasn’t had a winning season since the 2009-10 team, coached by Eric Davis, finished 23-3 and made the N.C. 4A sectional playoff semifinals. Since then, the Titans are 47-97.
