Will rain cancel the Coca-Cola 600? Here’s the forecast for Sunday’s NASCAR race

Editor’s note: The Coca-Cola 600 went into a caution due to rain in Lap 48. For live coverage of the NASCAR race, follow this link. Charlotte Observer reporter Alex Andrejev is live at the track.

Not even a global pandemic could alter NASCAR’s annual Coca-Cola 600 race scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, but Sunday’s forecast might.

There is a 60 percent chance of rain this evening with a chance of thunderstorms near Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., according to the National Weather Service. Rain has not yet hit the track, but skies are overcast. It is currently 81 degrees at the track.

The National Weather Service also predicts less than a tenth of an inch of rain, if any, with higher amounts if thunderstorms occur.

Weather in North and South Carolina has already impacted the sport’s return schedule. Last week, the Xfinity Series race was postponed to a later date in the week due to inclement weather, and the second Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, S.C. on Wednesday was called early due to rain.

NASCAR has three consecutive days of racing scheduled at Charlotte Motor Speedway, beginning with the Coke 600 at 6 p.m. Sunday, followed by an Xfinity race at 7:30 p.m. Monday, a Truck race at 8 p.m. Tuesday and another Cup race 8 p.m. Wednesday.

This page will be updated with the latest and weather and schedule information. NASCAR reporter Alex Andrejev will be covering the race live from the track. You can follow her on Twitter at @AndrejevAlex.
