Former Charlotte 49ers star Grant DuBose is stable after dangerous hit to head
A recent Charlotte 49ers’ football standout had to be carted off an NFL field on Sunday after a helmet-to-helmet hit.
Grant DuBose, now a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, was taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to a hospital during the third quarter of Miami’s 20-12 loss to the Houston Texans.
“Dolphins WR Grant DuBose has been ruled out with a head injury,” the Dolphins posted in a statement on X. “He is in stable condition and being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.”
DuBose was trying to make a catch over the middle of the field, and Houston rookie safety Calen Bullock drilled him, sending DuBose’s head into the turf.
DuBose immediately clenched both fists — referred to as the “fencing response,” a sign of a serious head injury — and remained motionless. Medical personnel were on the field for nearly 12 minutes, removing his facemask and helmet and eventually appearing to cut off his jersey.
Bullock was penalized for hitting a defenseless receiver.
DuBose, 23, joined Charlotte in 2021 from a Division II school in Alabama, where he had found himself working in a Wal-Mart. He was named an All-Conference USA selection following both his seasons for the Niners; and became the fifth player in school history to be picked in the NFL Draft.
