Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young leaves game vs. Jets with injury. What we know
The Carolina Panthers are monitoring the status of quarterback Bryce Young after he left Sunday’s 13-6 win over the New York Jets with an ankle injury.
Young left the game in the third quarter after a third-down sack by Jets defensive lineman Jowon Briggs. The Panthers, who had built a 13-3 lead, replaced Young with veteran backup QB Andy Dalton on the final play of the third quarter.
“We’re evaluating him for the right ankle, so we’re taking in all the information, and we’re going to look at him when we get home some more and see where we’re at,” head coach Dave Canales told reporters after the game. “(It happened) on that long third down. He was trying to get out of trouble there and got caught up a little bit. So we’ll update you as soon as we have more information.”
Young walked to the Panthers’ locker room under his own power, though television footage showed him walking with a slight limp. After initially being listed as questionable to return, he was ruled out for the remainder of the game midway through the fourth quarter.
Dalton took control of the offense in the fourth quarter following an interception in the end zone by Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn. The 37-year-old quarterback finished his day 4 of 7 for 60 yards and with no turnovers.
When asked how Dalton might change the offense this upcoming Week 8, when the Panthers host the Buffalo Bills, Canales said he and his staff will “look at all that” and “see what the best version of us is.”
“Right now, it’s running the football, and Andy can handle all those things,” Canales said. “The pass game, the reps, the time on task with the group that we have: We got to stay within our core of our system. And you know, Andy’s fully involved in all that. So if he does play, that’ll be the mode.”
Dalton’s biggest play of the day was a deep completion to Xavier Legette on third-and-8 that sealed the Panthers’ win. The victory puts the team at 4-3; Sunday marked the team’s first win on the road this season and the first time the franchise has been over .500 since 2021.
Young led three scoring drives against the Jets. He completed 15 of 25 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown in the Meadowlands before sustaining the ankle injury. Canales characterized Young’s day up until his injury as “excellent.”
“Throwing in rhythm, making sure we’re getting to the right runs based on the looks and all those things,” Canales said. “He’s been just continuing to build off of that, just feeling confident about our process and being able to push our football forward. So he’s been doing a great job.”
Young has yet to miss a game this season. In fact, he’s only missed one game due to injury his entire NFL career — a Week 3 contest his rookie season, also due to an ankle injury.
Panthers running back Rico Dowdle told reporters after the game that he caught up with Young in the locker room. Dowdle said Young told him that he received an X-ray and that he was “going to be fine.”
