Independence Boulevard traveling outbound was closed at Village Lake Drive on Tuesday after a water main break in the area, Charlotte police officials said Tuesday afternoon.
Police initially described the water main break as a sinkhole but corrected that later in the afternoon.
At first, the road was expected to be closed for several hours while repairs were done, but after 5 p.m., police said the "best case scenario" would be to have Independence completely open by Wednesday afternoon.
There wasn't a clear reason for the break in the 12-inch water main, Charlotte Water officials said.
Drivers in the area should expect heavy delays.
