A former Cherryville High School teacher who had sex with a 17-year-old student is not going to serve time in jail, according to the Gaston Gazette.
Instead, Summer Sparrow, 41, gave up her teaching license under a deferred prosecution arrangement. She will not be allowed on Gaston County Schools property and cannot attend any function where students are gathered for the next year, the Gazette reports.
If Sparrow sticks to the arrangement for the next year, her charges could be dismissed and she will be able to petition the court for them to be expunged, the Gazette reported. Failure to adhere to the agreement could mean 16 to 29 months in jail, it was reported.
Sparrow was an English teacher at Cherryville High School when a student and his parents reported the allegations to Cherryville police in October.
The 17-year-old student said the relationship started on the social media app Snapchat and continued on a daily basis until the exchanges became flirtatious. Sparrow ended up taking the teen to her home, where they engaged in sexual intercourse, authorities said. Search warrants in the case showed that the student took a nude photo of Sparrow and shared it with his friends on Snapchat, police said.
