Transformer fire under control at McGuire Nuclear Station – no evacuation needed
The black smoke billowing from the McGuire Nuclear Station early Wednesday was the result of a transformer fire, according to the Huntersville Fire Department.
The fire was confined to where it started. It was brought under control about 9:45 a.m., and damage was confined to the transformer building on the site, officials said.
“No evacuation required and all surrounding areas are safe,” said a tweet from the department. “No need to be concerned.”
Crews flowed foam and water to cool the transformer. “We expect to remain on scene for an extended period of time,” officials said. A tanker was also called in from the East Lincoln Fire Department, officials said.
