Driver killed after car bursts into flames down a ‘steep embankment,’ NC police say

A driver died after he veered off a road and his car burst into flames down a “steep embankment,” Rocky Mount Police said Saturday.

Robby Griffin, 46, was found dead in the driver’s seat, police said.

Firefighters were extinguishing flames in the car when officers arrived at the scene in the 11000 block of N.C. 97 East about 2 a.m., according to a Rocky Mount Police Department news release.

Griffin was driving a Subaru Forester westbound when he left the right side of the road and hit a tree down the embankment, police said.

Rocky Mount lies along the Tar River east of Interstate 95 in Edgecombe and Nash counties, nearly 60 miles northeast of Raleigh and 225 miles from Charlotte.

Officers urged anyone with information about the wreck to call the police department at 252-972-1411 or Crimestoppers at 252-977-1111 for cash rewards, or contact Text-A-Tip by texting RMPOL and a message to 274637.
