Shooting victims crash into Novant Presbyterian Cancer Center on way to ER
A car carrying two shooting victims crashed into the entrance of the Novant Presbyterian Cancer Center early Monday, apparently while trying to reach the emergency room entrance, and one passenger later died, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
Markas Vereen, 19, was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The other victim in the car hasn’t been identified. According to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner, Vereen had been shot in the head and the second victim was shot in the leg.
Police reported that Vereen was shot in the 3600 block of Wheatley Avenue near Randolph Road. Police were called to the scene at 1:31 a.m.
A short time later, police were called to Novant Presbyterian after a car crashed into the entrance of the cancer center, right next to the ER entrance at the rear of the hospital facility on Caswell Avenue across from Vail Avenue. Two people in the car had apparent gunshot wounds.
By Monday afternoon, one area was still wrapped in yellow crime scene tape, although the cancer center entrance was still accessible.
Police are still investigating both the shooting and the crash. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
