4-month-old boy hit by bullet outside Charlotte apartment

An infant boy was wounded by a bullet to the ankle Monday in southwest Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

The child, who was not identified, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officers they were called at 3:26 p.m. Monday by Carolinas Medical Center Monday, about a mother came to the hospital with a 4-month-old boy. The child had a gunshot wound to the leg, police said.

Investigators say the mother had been walking to her apartment with the infant on Romare Bearden Drive in southwest Charlotte when an unknown suspect fired a gun. One bullet went through the infant's ankle and grazed the mother. Her injuries were not life threatening, police said.
