Woman killed in east Charlotte robbery, police say

A woman was shot and killed Tuesday morning during an armed robbery in east Charlotte.

The incident took place around 6 a.m. in the 6200 block of block of Barrington Drive, where police said two men robbed and shot the woman, who was identified as 36-year-old Maria Eduvigig Echeverria de Gomez.

She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, police said.

The robbery and shooting happened while Gomez was waiting to be picked up to go to work, Gomez's brother told WCNC. The TV station did not release the brother's name.

She was the mother of a 13-year-old, and had moved to Charlotte 17 months ago, relatives told WSOC. The station reported Gomez worked as a landscaper.

The two men left the scene in a black sedan, police said, and were last seen driving on Barrington Drive toward Milton Road.

Police initially said two people had been shot, but clarified that there was one victim.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
