U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, Charlotte’s former mayor, is expected to attend the groundbreaking ceremony Saturday for the second phase of the streetcar line.

The event is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Mosaic Village, 1635 West Trade St.

The project will extend the current 1.5-mile streetcar line by 2.5 miles – to Johnson C. Smith University to the west and to Sunnyside Avenue to the east. The extension is expected to be done by summer of 2020.
