Despite nightly rallies, school protests Friday, midnight curfew, CMS football games are on
Despite three nights of protests that have sometimes turned violent and sometimes shut down city streets and highways, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools football games will be played as scheduled Friday night.
CMS spokesperson Renee McCoy said the district is following the protests closely. They began after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Brentley Vinson shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott in north Charlotte Tuesday afternoon. Both Vinson and Scott are African-American.
Greensboro TV news reporter Hope Ford reported that there was a mostly non-violent protest at Hopewell High School Friday morning, though police were called when students began to throw objects. Protesting students were eventually separated from others and moved to another part of campus and allowed to continue.

It is not known if any protests are planned for Friday night’s games or if student-athletes might stage some type of protest, like San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who does not stand for the national anthem to protest police brutality against African-Americans.
“The district is working in concert with local law enforcement agencies in Charlotte and surrounding jurisdictions to ensure a safe environment for students and supporters at all athletic events,” McCoy told the Observer.
There are nine home games involving CMS schools scheduled for Friday. The games begin at 7 p.m. and students and student-athletes should be able to return home prior to the city’s new midnight curfew. One CMS school, North Mecklenburg, will play in Kannapolis, against A.L. Brown. That game begins at 7:30 p.m.
