Belmont South Point moves to No. 1 in AP statewide prep football poll

Belmont South Point moved to No. 1 in this week’s N.C. Associated Press media polls.

South Point is the new No. 1 in 2A after four-time state champion Shelby was shut out by Rock Hill’s nationally ranked South Pointe team 25-0 Friday. Rock Hill South Pointe is a 4A team. Shelby won the N.C. 2A state championship last year, its fourth straight state championship.

Shelby fell to No. 2 in this week’s 2A poll.

Belmont’s South Point (5-0) became the new No. 1 in 2A, getting seven first place votes from a panel of 12 media members including the Observer. Shelby received three first-place votes. Belmont South Point won the N.C. 3A state championship last season.
