Mallard Creek is returning to a familiar spot this week.

The Mavericks, who have won 16 straight games, jumped up two spots to No. 1 in the Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16 girls basketball poll. Mallard Creek will play an Elite 8 high school playoff game Tuesday at home. Mallard Creek (27-2) will play West Forsyth (24-3) at 6:30 p.m.

Mallard Creek is trying to reach the regional championship for the second straight year under Mavericks coach Clarence Johnson, who won his 200th game in Saturday’s 66-51 win over No. 5 South Mecklenburg in the third round.
