Spring Sports Roundup: Lake Norman Charter gets hat trick from Ayden Yates, win over rival
Sophomore Ayden Yates got the Lake Norman Charter girls soccer team off to a big start Monday night in a north Mecklenburg showdown with Community School of Davidson.
Yates hat trick helped the host Knights down the Spartans 4-1.
The two schools are coming off big seasons.
Community School of Davidson went 25-2 last spring, falling in a shootout to Raleigh Franklin Academy in the 1A state championship match. That came a year after the Spartans won the 1A state title, beating Franklin Academy.
Lake Norman Charter went 17-6 last season and reached the third round of the 3A state playoffs.
In Mondays match, Yates scored twice in the first half, giving Lake Norman Charter a 2-0 lead. The Spartans narrowed the gap to 2-1 late in the half behind a goal from Darby Bevis, on an assist by Kaitlyn Russell.
But Yates scored again in the second half, and Alex Behnke added a tally on a penalty kick to close the scoring.
Both teams have tough assignments in their next games. Lake Norman Charter hosts 3A power Concord Cox Mill on Wednesday, while Community School of Davidson faces another 3A power, Charlotte Catholic, on Thursday in the Queen City Classic at Charlotte Latin.
