Tuesday's spring roundup: Charlotte Latin, Providence Day continue soccer dominance

Charlotte Latin and Providence Day continued their runs Tuesday toward a pair of big showdowns in girls’ soccer later this month.

Latin, the defending state private schools’ Division 3 champion, trounced visiting Charlotte Christian 7-1. Providence Day, which lost to Latin in the state championship game last spring, blanked visiting Charlotte Country Day 7-0.

It left the schools tied at 2-0 in the CISAA. They will face each other next Monday at Latin and again April 24 at Providence Day.

For Latin, Mary Elliott McCabe once again led the way, scoring four goals and assisting on two others. Sutton Jones added two goals, and Anna Calloway had three assists.

Morgan Hart’s four goals and Katerina Peroulas’ two goals led Providence Day.

In the other CISAA girls’ soccer action, Covenant Day edged visiting Concord Cannon School 3-2. Freshman Sedona Dancu and Emily Doyle accounted for the scoring, with Dancu netting two goals and Doyle the other.

Featured performers

Savannah Brown (Hickory Grove Christian girls’ softball): Brown tossed a 2-hitter, striking out 16, and slammed a home run in her team’s 10-0 victory at Concord First Assembly.

Cassidy Calhoun (Kings Mountain girls’ soccer): Calhoun, a senior, scored four goals and added an assist in her team’s 9-0 romp at North Gaston.

Anna Crenshaw (Gaston Christian girls’ softball): Crenshaw smacked a pair of home runs and drove in six runs, as Gaston Christian topped High Point Christian 16-6.

Ella Futch (Charlotte Catholic girls’ soccer): Futch, a freshman, earned a shutout in goal as the Cougars remained first in their conference, beating Marvin Ridge 3-0.

Belle Hardwick (South Mecklenburg girls’ lacrosse): Hardwick scored 14 goals in her team’s 15-10 victory over Providence.

Gabby Holloway (Concord Cannon School girls’ softball): Holloway fired a no-hitter striking out 15, in her team’s 7-0 victory at Covenant Day.

Sean Walsh (York boys’ soccer): Walsh scored six goals in his team’s 6-3 victory over Blythewood Westwood.

Reagan Weisner (South Caldwell girls’ softball): Weisner smacked two home runs and drove in four as her team beat Alexander Central 11-9 in a Northwestern 3A-4A first-place showdown.

Boys’ golf

Covenant Day 175, Carmel Christian 180: Playing at Pine Lake Country Club, Ely Dykes (40) and Michael Everson (41) led Covenant Day. But Carmel Christian’s Austin Brooke took medalist honors with a 37. It was his fourth medalist round of the season.

Lake Norman 17, Lake Norman Charter 4: Lake Norman built a 12-2 halftime lead and coasted. Mitchell Cody (five goals) and Matthew Elder (four goals) led the attack.

Providence Day 13, Charlotte Country Day 12: The Chargers are now 4-0 in league play and 9-2 overall.

Boys’ tennis

Charlotte Country Day 9, Providence Day 0: The Buccaneers got singles victories from Luke McClelland, Tarun Prakish, Bennet Turner, Karlan Van Cleef, Johnny Bingham and Michael Smith. Doubles winners were the teams of McClelland-Turner, Prakish-Van Cleef, and Bingham-Smith.

Charlotte Latin 9, Charlotte Christian 0: The tightest match was No. 3 singles, where Jackson Willett edged Drew Metz 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7). Other Latin winners were Ian Bircak, Smith O’Leary, Taylor Pearce, Will Coburn and Ethan Li in singles, and the doubles teams of Bircak-O’Leary, Lewis-Coburn and Adam Darwich-Willett.

Concord Cannon School 6, Covenant Day 3: Sean Jenkins and Davis Norton took the No. 1 and 2 singles matches for Covenant Day, but Cannon School dominated this match.

Marvin Ridge 9, Waxhaw Cuthbertson 0

South Mecklenburg 7, Berry Academy 0: Payton Smith, Charlie Shober, Ethan Sorell, Henry Gelinas and Michael Hickman took singles victories for the Sabres, now 6-2 in So Meck 7 4A play.

Girls’ lacrosse

Charlotte Country Day 22, Myers Park 12: Sadie Charles Calame scored six goals for the Buccaneers, who also got five goals each from Charlotte Pedlow and Thea Reddin. Becca Riopel (four goals) and Jessica Phillips (three goals) led the Mustangs.

Hough 16, Ardrey Kell 9: Erike Gonzalez (four goals) and Arianna Meletiou (three goals, three assists) paced the Huskies.

South Mecklenburg 15, Providence 10: Playing at the Matthews SportsPlex, the Sabres got a 14-goal outing from Belle Hardwick and their other goal from Lauren Linares.

Hough 9, Vance 0: The Huskies improved to 6-0 in the conference and set up their first-place showdown at Lake Norman.

Lake Norman 3, North Mecklenburg 2: The Warriors also improved to 6-0. Macy Butz and Lauren Hobbs scored for North Mecklenburg.

Mallard Creek 4, Mooresville 1: The Mavericks outscored Mooresville 3-1 in the second half.

Independence 3, East Mecklenburg 2: Lauren Shea and Sarah Hall scored for East Mecklenburg.

Indian Trail Porter Ridge 2, Butler 1: The Pirates improved to 5-2 in the conference. Kristen Lliso scored for Butler.

Myers Park 10, Rocky River 0: Ari Maibodi and Caileen Almeida each scored a pair of goals for the Mustangs, now 6-0 in the conference. Abby Britt and Charlotte Butler split time in goal, and each scored a goal when playing a different position.

Boiling Springs Crest 1, Cramerton Stuart Cramer 0: The Chargers scored in the first half and improved to 6-1 in the conference.

Kings Mountain 9, North Gaston 0: Lindsay Deaver scored three goals and added two assists for the Mountaineers.

Lawndale Burns 6, Gastonia Huss 2: The Bulldogs earned their first Big South 3A victory after six losses. Trinity Gray had a goal and an assist for Huss.

China Grove Jesse Carson 9, Statesville 0: Lani Isley’s three goals and Gracie Thomason’s two tallies carried Jesse Carson.

Central Cabarrus 2, Concord Jay M. Robinson 1: Kylie Marin scored both Viking goals (on assists from Piper Barras).

Concord Cox Mill 9, Northwest Cabarrus 2: Naomi Fountain and Sarah McHale each scored a pair of goals for the Chargers.

Kannapolis A.L. Brown 4, Concord 1: After a 0-8 start, the Wonders have won two in a row.

Charlotte Catholic 3, Marvin Ridge 0: Logan Webb scored two goals and Eveleen Hahn added another, as the Cougars improved to 6-0 in the conference and dropped Marvin Ridge to 5-2.

Unionville Piedmont 4, Indian Trail Sun Valley 3 (OT): Emma Gooch scored twice for the victorious Panthers, with Reilly Price and Isabella Simpson adding goals. Bayley Dawson, Hailey Valenti and Lauren Rhodes scored for Sun Valley.

Lenoir Hibriten 6, Morganton Patton 1: The Panthers built a 4-0 halftime lead and ran their conference record to 6-0 (12-1 overall).

Belmont South Point 4, R-S Central 3: Emma King and Brooke Villemagne each scored twice, as the Red Raiders won a first-place showdown with the Hilltoppers.

Gaston Day 3, Gaston Christian 2: McKaley Boston, Maddie Ginther and Ella Smith each scored goals for Gaston Day, now 6-1 in the conference. Izzy Hoover had both of Gaston Christian’s goals.

Hickory Grove Christian 5, Concord First Assembly 0: Goalkeeper Lucy Jennings posted a clean sheet, making 10 saves. Rea Syska (three goals, one assist) led the offense.

Indian Trail Metrolina Christian 5, Northside Christian 1: Up 2-1, the Warriors outscored their foes 3-0 in the second half. They are now 5-0 in the conference.

Woodlawn School 2, United Faith Christian 1: Eighth-grader Kate Fleming scored both goals for the Trailblazers.

S.C. REGION 3 4A

York 8, Blythewood Westwood 0: York improved to 7-0 in the region.

Chester 3, Columbia 0: Katie Glenn, Shakena Hall and Courtlyn Fortes each had a goal for the Cyclones.

Olympic 11, South Mecklenburg 5: The visiting Trojans improved to 7-1 in the league, taking advantage of seven Sabre errors. Aisha Weixlmann drove in three runs for Olympic, while Maddy Nicholson had two hits and three RBI for the Sabres.

Providence 15, Harding 0: The host Panthers ran their conference record to 8-0 (11-3 overall).

SOUTHWESTERN 4A

Harrisburg Hickory Ridge 15, Garinger 0: The Ragin’ Bulls improved to 7-2 in the conference and 9-2 overall.

Indian Trail Porter Ridge 7, Butler 2: The host Pirates improved to 9-0 and opened a two-game lead over Butler and Hickory Ridge with five league games remaining.

NORTHWESTERN 3A-4A

South Caldwell 11, Alexander Central 9: The host Spartans won the first-place showdown, as Addison Blair and Anna King each drove in two runs in support of Reagan Weisner’s two home runs. Alexis Walter singled, homered and drove in three runs for Alexander Central. South Caldwell is now 8-1 in the conference, with Alexander Central at 7-2.

Charlotte Christian 13, Charlotte Latin 2: The Hawks built a 7-2 lead after two innings and cruised, smacking 14 hits.

Concord Cannon School 7, Covenant Day 0: Holloway’s no-hitter led Cannon School, but losing pitcher Sadie Evans allowed only one earned run and struck out 10.

Providence Day 6, Charlotte Country Day 4: Katie Batten drove in four runs, and Alyssa Farrar went 3-for-4 in a losing cause.

BIG SOUTH 3A

Boiling Springs Crest 4, Cramerton Stuart Cramer 1: The Chargers scored three in the sixth and one more in the seventh, improving to 9-0 in the conference. Gracie Wright had two of Stuart Cramer’s three hits.

Gastonia Forestview 17, Gastonia Ashbrook 4: The host Jaguars scored 12 times in the third inning. Hannah Bruce and Abbey Curtis each had three hits and three RBI.

Kings Mountain 13, North Gaston 11: Down 10-7 after six innings, the Mountaineers battled back for the win. The teams totaled 28 hits, with North Gaston’s Savanna Baldwin hitting a double and home run, driving in four runs.

Lawndale Burns 22, Gastonia Huss 2: The Bulldogs scored 15 times in the second inning and ran their conference record to 6-3.

South Iredell 5, China Grove Jesse Carson 3: The Vikings improved to 3-1 in the conference and dropped Jesse Carson to 3-2.

Charlotte Catholic 14, Waxhaw Cuthbertson 7: The Cougars scored in every inning but the sixth. Maddy Hanson and Lyndon Gerber each slammed home runs, and Hanson had four RBI.

Marvin Ridge 3, Unionville Piedmont 2: The Mavericks dropped Piedmont two games behind first-place Parkwood, with Jessica Davis slamming a three-run homer in the fifth inning. Winning pitcher Gabby Baylog tossed a four-hit shutout. Marvin Ridge is 7-2 in the conference, while Piedmont drops to 6-2.

Monroe Parkwood 3, Indian Trail Sun Valley 2: Parkwood fended off Sun Valley’s upset bid, improving to 10-0 in the conference and 12-0 overall. Angel Jones had two of Sun Valley’s four hits, while Mary Pierce Barnes, Sarah Harkins and Allie Griffin each had a pair of hits for Parkwood. Caroline Ruther topped Maureen Camacho in a pitchers’ duel.
