Charlotte Latin senior Mary Elliott McCabe reached another landmark in her soccer career Tuesday night, and it helped her team in a key conference showdown.

McCabe scored two goals, and Latin downed Providence Day 3-1 in a CISAA girls’ match.

The second goal was McCabe’s 102nd at Charlotte Latin, breaking the school career record held by Tiffany Tisdale Rice. Rice, a 1994 Latin graduate, finished with 101 goals before going to Ohio State. There, she set or tied several school records.

McCabe is a North Carolina commit.

Anna Calloway scored Latin’s other goal Tuesday night, helping the Hawks improve to 7-0 in the conference and dropping Providence Day to 5-2. Grace Stokes scored for the Chargers.

Latin, the defending private school state Division 3 champion, is 13-1-1 on the season. The Hawks’ only loss this season came on March 10, by a 4-2 score to Charlotte Catholic. They also tied Hough.

Providence Day dropped to 10-2-2 overall, with a pair of losses to Latin.

Weather’s impact

The rain and thunderstorms of the past two days wreaked havoc with the Charlotte-area high school spring sports schedules – especially since this is the final week of the regular season for baseball and softball in North Carolina.

Rain also pushed back several opening games in the South Carolina high school baseball playoffs, which were to begin Tuesday.

Most games and matches have been rescheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

Three major county track and field championships were postponed. The Cabarrus County meet will take place Wednesday at Kannapolis A.L. Brown, the Rowan County meet will be Friday at East Rowan, and the Iredell County meet will be Friday at South Iredell.
