Charlotte Latin star named NC girls soccer player of the year
Charlotte Latin's Mary Elliott McCabe is the 2018 N.C. Gatorade girls soccer player of the year.
The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. McCabe is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced later this month.
McCabe, a 5-foot-5 senior forward, led Charlotte Latin to a 19-1-1 record and a fourth straight N.C. Independent Schools' state championship. She had 43 goals and 14 assists for the season, and she had two goals an assist in a 3-1 win over rival Providence Day in the state final.
McCabe is a four-time, first-team all-state selection. She ended her career with 117 goals and 51 assists.
McCabe has volunteered locally as part of multiple fundraising campaigns to benefit children’s cancer research through Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. She has also donated her time as a member of the Charlotte Latin School Booster Club and as a youth soccer coach. She has a 4.14 GPA and has signed to play at North Carolina next fall.
“Mary Elliott’s pace and technical ability alone would separate her from most players,” said Graham West, head coach of Covenant Day School. “But it was her attacking IQ that put her on a different level. Her runs were smart, decisive and effective, and her nose for the goal, and composure in front of it, were unmatched.”
