East Carolina to host open football practice at Rocky River High Saturday
East Carolina and first-year head football coach Scottie Montgomery will host an open practice Saturday at Rocky River High. Montgomery is 1996 graduate of Burn High School in Lawndale.
The practice is free and open to the public. It will begin at 2:30 p.m. Players and coaches will be available for autographs after the practice concludes around 5 p.m.
Rocky River head football coach Jason Fowler said East Carolina officials contacted the school about hosting the event here in Charlotte, where the Pirates have a large alumni following. North Carolina held a scrimmage at Fowler’s school last year, and he said other schools have held football activities on campus before, including Virginia Union, Winston-Salem State and Appalachian State.
“They said they wanted to come here and do a practice,” Fowler said. “They called about a month ago. We try to accommodate these games. We try to build relationships with those schools and it’s good for our kids. Our kids can see what big-time football looks like up close, and anytime we can put our school in a good positive light, that’s good.”
Fowler and Rocky River were scheduled to open their season with a game against N.C. power Richmond Senior at home Friday.
▪ Saturday’s practice will be a homecoming for several Pirates players:
Defensive lineman Bennett Boateng (Independence High, Charlotte); offensive lineman J.T. Boyd (Fort Mill Nation Ford High); quarterback Jason Connella (Independence High, Charlotte); offensive lineman Jaison Fournet (Hough High, Cornelius); punter Greg Worth (Fort Mill High); offensive lineman Jared Huneycutt (Central Cabarrus High, Concord); offensive lineman Austin Lee (Lake Norman High, Mooresville); long snapper Colton Oliver (Independence High, Charlotte); linebacker Aaron Ramseur (Boiling Springs Crest High); defensive back Corey Seargent (Rock Hill Northwestern High); defensive back Devon Sutton (North Mecklenburg High, Huntersville);
