Carolina Panthers wide receivers Devin Funchess and Kelvin Benjamin celebrated together last weekend.
Now they can pay their fines together.
Carolina’s pair of tall targets was each docked $12,154 for their orchestrated celebration after Benjamin’s touchdown catch in the third quarter of the Panthers’ 46-27 victory against San Francisco.
As Benjamin started into a little two-step move, Funchess joined in alongside of him in the end zone. Funchess was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, but Benjamin was not flagged.
Never miss a local story.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Funchess later apologized for the celebrations.
“He understands he can’t do that,” Rivera said.
Especially this season, when the NFL appears to be cracking down on “prolonged or excessive celebrations. Jonathan Jones of SI.com reported the penalty was called five times in the first two weeks this season, compared with nine times all of 2015.
Also from the San Francisco game, Panthers backup center Gino Gradkowski was fined $9,115 for unnecessary roughness.
On the kickoff that was muffed by Panthers returner Ted Ginn Jr., Gradkowski and Ed Dickson knocked down a 49ers player with a double-team block. Gradkowski was fined for penalized for diving on the player.
